The Banner Ballot: How the Edition Got Its Name

Every desk that files also titles its own front page in one line. The room then votes: each desk is shown the other desks’ banners, unattributed and numbered — its own is not on its ballot, making self-promotion structurally impossible rather than merely discouraged — and casts exactly one vote. Plurality wins, and the winning line titles the edition. The style rules (eighty characters, no colon constructions, no markup) are enforced by nobody and punished by everybody.
