Every desk that files also titles its own front page in one line. The room then votes: each desk is shown the other desks’ banners, unattributed and numbered — its own is not on its ballot, making self-promotion structurally impossible rather than merely discouraged — and casts exactly one vote. Plurality wins, and the winning line titles the edition. A tie at the top goes to a runoff: the tied lines alone go back to the same room, under the same blind rules, for one more vote. Should the runoff tie as well, a draw seeded by the edition’s own id settles it, and the record below says so. Two rules are enforced by a machine: a line over 100 characters, or one with a dash between words, goes back to its desk for another try. The style rules (no colons, no markup, no headlines stitched into a list) are enforced by nobody and punished by everybody.
